Hypnotoad
Well, I have this journal. I figured I should probably start using it. For those of you who don't know me, I am the mole. Of course, when I went to sign up, this name was already taken. After various attempts involving several permutations of this name, we decided to go with momar_mole because—well, just because.

If you haven't checked out the bio, I'm currently in graduate school at the University of Illinois at Chicago pursuing my Master's degree in geophysics with the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences (henceforth EaES). My project proposal presentation is coming up on October 23rd, so everyone wish me luck. My office mate just had his earlier this week and got REAMED by his committee (who are, incidentally, the same people that are on my committee). Let's hope I fare a bit better.

I've lived in Chicago all of my life—aside from brief, quasi-educational attempts in Madison, Wisconsin and Laurinburg, North Carolina—and I still love it here. I'm nutty about Chicago pro sports (and no, hockey doesn't count), but this usually leads to depression. Luckily, I'm not a Cubs fan. This affords me slightly less depression than most people in town, especially since October 26th, 2005, when this happened:

Living on the North Side has been a lot easier since then.

Speaking of living on the North Side, I am a graduate of DePaul University's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, with a B.A. in Geography, including minors in both Physics and Mathematics.

It was while at DePaul that I discovered my love of wine thanks to a fantastic course entitled, "The World of Wine." Many of my friends will tell you that this course single-handedly turned me into a wine snob, but they're just jealous of my newfound (new? this happened two years ago) awesomeness. Because of my over the top love for the vine and the lovely nectar it creates, I fear that this journal will, at times, devolve into a wine blog, but this won't happen tonight. This is because I am broke, and will be until Monday. It's hard to write about wine if you don't have any. Of course, this isn't true. I do have two half-drank bottles that will hopefully last me until Monday, but I'm not holding my breath.

I've found my way to this forum through the Heroes Meet Market (henceforth HMM), which is a message board at Television Without Pity (henceforth TWoP). It's a place where fans of Heroes can get together and chat. The irony, of course, is that we're not actually allowed to discuss the show on that particular board, but it's one of the few places I've been able to find people whose braaains are as crack-addled as mine is. Anyhow, many of them have their own LJ accounts and I was easily persuaded to join in on all the fun.

When I'm not here, or at HMM, or the wine shop, or at school (yikes, how much time is left?), I can usually be found at home watching tv or playing my acoustic guitar. Yes, life is quite exciting.

Well, that's my introduction. I'm not sure how often I'll be posting to this journal, but I look forward to getting to know the LJ community a little better and I'll try my best not to bore you all to tears.

Cheers!

I am,

the mole

Aw, for a second I thought you were going to end it as:

"I am,

BATMAN!"

...That would have been cool.

Yeah, but he can't just go blabbing his secret identity all over the place like that, geez.

Well, he's among friends now, isn't he?

It's okay, Bruce. You can confide in us.

Also? You're icon really, really rocks. And is appropriate.

Ooh! I watch Mad Men! Doesn't that make you love me even more than you did before? Aren't I simply amazing?

... No? Okay then.

HOLY SHIT YESYESYES!!!

How sad is it that next week is the last episode?! The show has a viewer base of, like, 5 people, so it probably won't even be back for another season, which kind of makes me want to throw things at the TeeVee.

Oh me, oh my. I don't look at this for a few hours and there are, like 8 new comments. Yeesh. To clear things up (although feel free to continue with the ramblings; they're quite entertaining), I've signed things with "I am, the mole" ever since I adopted the moniker. Also, I have no idea what Mad Men is, but if involves cable, I've never seen it (well, I've never seen it regardless, but if it's on cable, that explains why).

All I can think of with the Batman stuff is Michael Keaton saying, "I'm Batman, I'm Batman . . . I'm Batman," under his breath while Kim Bassinger's in the next room receiving a floral boquet from Jack Nicholson. And then she totally gets kidnaped, y'all!

Hey, so I have another question that I thought warranted it's own thread. How did you get snapshots? Because I think they're awesome and want to steal them from you, but when I put the link into my CSS it didn't work. How did you perform this great feat?

This statement makes no sense to me, so I'll assume you were asking someone else.

On your LJ you have this thing where if you roll your mouse over a link then a little snapshot of the site it links to pops up. But it doesn't really matter anymore, since it didn't exactly do what I wanted....Just ignore me.

Oh, that! Well, the truth is, I really have no idea how that happened. I just put the link in my entry and it did that on its own. I'm kind of technoligically inept, so I can only speculate, but I never changed the LJ display from the one they gave me (I just checked; it's called wizard-flexiblesquares/bluegray), so maybe it's got something to do with that. It's certainly not something I could've done on my own without reading pages and pages of FAQ first (which is what I had to do before I figured out how to include web links, at all).

Okay, I think I've figured it out. First I went to "edit profile" and then I went to "viewing options." There's a box on that page called "Graphic Previews: Enable graphic previews on external links within your journal; Allows viewers to preview links and linked images when hovering over external links within your journal."
This box was already checked for me, so I think that's probably what you need to do.
