Sweet 16/Elite 8 Update

This one is FAR simpler than last week's update, and the point about folding my bracket in half remains in effect.

East & West Regions: The only game I missed was Duke. I had them losing to UConn, not Arizona I had them beating Texas, though.

Southeast & Southwest Regions: I did not win a single game, these two rounds. Not one. And it's ridiculous that VCU has gotten this far when I didn't even have them winning their play-in game.

Man, it does NOT feel like that was 13 years ago. More like 6 or 7…I'm too damn old. :(

Fun fact: I got my MFA at the UofA, which makes me a Wildcat forever, I suppose. I've got two pairs of sweatpants to prove it! One desperately threadbare...

Aw, sorry about Arizona, then. They had a couple shots to win the game, last night, but UConn is pretty tough. They're actually the team I picked to win it all, so losing to the Huskies in the final seconds is nothing to bat an eye at plus, I may have had Arizona losing their opening round game to Texas. But I don't think just going to a school necessarily means you have to cheer for their teams.

[WARNING: Long, rambling, fairly pointless recounting of an event from almost two decades ago, ahead!]

Take me: I have been to many colleges and Universities in my time, but—while I strongly considered going to grad school at Kentucky—I have no academic affiliation to UK, whatsoever. The reason I'm such a fan of theirs is that, pretty much exactly eighteen years ago, I was at a church conference in Louisville, visiting some friends of mine. Well, around 7pm on Saturday, the conference basically shut down so that everyone could watch the Wildcats play the Fab Five in the Elite 8 game to see who could advance to the Final Four.

I had pretty much never watched college basketball before, and had no allegiances whatsoever (though I had heard of Michigan and the Fab Five, I think—they were a national story). During the game, a girl named Kelly asked me who I was a fan of, and I had to admit that I didn't really have any favorite college teams. While I was saying this, she kinda got a gleam in her eye, which I can only surmise was a thought along the lines of, "AHA! An unmolded lump of clay to shape in my image!" She kinda cut me off and said, "No. You're a Kentucky fan. They're the team in blue; you want them to win. …Oh, and you HATE Louisville!"

Now, I am not a sheep, but a lot of these kids were my friends and they were, like, SUPER invested in this team and the game. Plus—and I think this is what sealed it—Kentucky actually LOST that game, and I had to see them all kinda dejected for the rest of the night. And it didn't hurt that Kelly and I had been flirting for much of the weekend, either. Anyway, I've been a 'Cats fan ever since. So that's my story; I'm just gonna stop now…

I literally just realized we were talking about two different Wildcats, lol. You can see how little I'm actually up on things.

Now that I go to UWM, all I know is that I'm supposed to hate Marquette. Ah, sports team love/hate.

HA! Well, the 1997 finals was between Arizona and Kentucky, so there were Wildcats aplenty, that year. Arizona won, though, which made me angry. But UK won in '96 and '98, so I'm pretty much over it, by now.

And I am also supposed to hate Marquette, due to the whole DePaul thing. I kind of DO hate them, actually, but it has far more to do with how they knocked Kentucky out of the tournament, whatever year it was that Dwayne Wade was a senior than it does with DePaul. I mean, I like DePaul, and I do cheer for them, in a way, but they aren't my favorite team. Sorry alma mater!

Huh, I thought basketball was already over. Duh, self, that's why it's called "March Madness", because it's throughout the whole month! Wow.

Aaaanyway, hurray for the Wildcats! Since it's already painfully obvious that I have no dog in this race, I hope they win!

YAY! That's the best reason to root for Kentucky, tbh. Actually, IDK if you read my loooooong comment above, but that's how I first became a UK fan!

And basketball is over for many, many teams, but the top 64 (well, now it's 68) teams get selected to play in the NCAA tournament for the national title. There's still one weekend left, too! Next Saturday the Final Four games will take place, and then the National Championship game will be on Monday. So, um…April Madness?

A begruding congrats on your team being making it to the Final Four. That the fates made me chose between rooting for Kentucky and the Tarheels is a cruel trick in a tournament rife with disaster!

Like many, my bracket's slow and painful death started with Louisville and ended with Kansas. How did I manage to not call even one Final Four team correctly? Oh, I know how, I picked teams that did not suck to make it to the Final Four! Is Butler the new Gonzaga? I hope not. Of course I am partly to blame, as Kansas fails to produce every year, yet I had them in the Finals. What was I thinking?

Though, by sheer luck, everyone in my little bracket pool's brackets also sucked, so I still managed to come in 4th... of 7. Which puts me firmly in the middle, a fact I can live with.

I think, by process of elimination (Duke fans are contractually obligated to hate Kentucky, Butler gave us a run in the finals last year and UConn is a victim of my general disdain for the Big East) I am going for VCU. They will not win, but hey... everyone else I have rooted for this year has lost, why not keep the streak alive? Go Rams!

I just can't with VCU, because they were the ONLY play-in team I missed. Also, they bounced us in the first round a few years back, so I am not a fan. It'd be nice to meet them in the finals and CRUSH them, but I'm doubtful that will happen. Still, it has been a redemption tournament for the Cats, with West Virginia, Ohio State, and North Carolina…so maybe?

I have TWO final four teams! Sadly, the right side of my bracket is SO terrible that I am in third place (but only by 2 points!). I've only lost 5 games on the left side! But I've only won 10 on the right side…and only 2 of those were not from the first round.

And the worst is that one of my bracket's leader also has UConn as champs, and I'm pretty sure this means I can't win (I can't—the "pretty sure" is to make myself feel better about it). So I'm now full-on rooting for my Wildcats. But I think Kemba might be too much for us. Which is just too bad.
